How to Know If It's A Sugar Addiction

Did you know that sugar addiction has a similar pathway as common drug addictions?

Here's what happens:

  • The release of dopamine and opioid in the brain are triggered by sugar consumption.
  • Dopamine = neurotransmitter (feelings of pleasure)
  • Opioid = relieve stress and pain

This signaling is our reward system. It's hijacked by sugar, like it is with drug use.

Here are some signs that you may be addicted to sugar:

  • Binging, withdrawal and craving patterns
  • Loss of control of amount consumed
  • Continuing despite negative consequences
  • Hiding sweets, eating alone
  • Craving salty foods

What's even more scary with sugar addiction is that the withdrawal symptoms (both mental & physical) are somewhat similar to the withdrawal symptoms for drug use:

Mental Symptoms

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Changes in sleep
  • Decreased cognitive function
  • Cravings

Physical Symptoms

  • Headaches
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle tremors or shakiness

If you are serious about decreasing sugar or removing it from your diet completely, it is possible. Here are some things can help.

Diet - include more protein rich foods, more fiber, and be sure to stay hydrated

Sleep - Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Sleep helps to regulate hunger and appetite

Stress Management - Find a practice you can do anytime, anywhere (ex. yoga, deep breathing, meditation)

Exercise - Helps to manage stress & increase cognitive function
