What is the quality of your relationships?
In honor of Mother's Day, I want to discuss how the health of relationships can be tied to our physical health. Most people don't realize the correlation and what a difference it makes to our physical, emotional, and mental health.
Relationships are part of our "Primary Foods." Primary Foods are those things like physical activity, having a job that you love, having a meaningful spiritual practice and having healthy relationships. It's been said that if our Primary Foods are out of balance, our "Secondary Foods", the foods we actually eat will also be out of balance, which in turn affects our physical health.
Research shows that many regulatory systems, especially blood pressure, metabolism and stress hormones, have all shown to be affected by relationships and the quality of social interaction.
So, how are your relationships? Is there one that you would like to work on? It's OK, we all have those relationships that need work from time to time.
Here are some easy ways to help improve those relationships:
Give verbal compliments - tell someone how much you appreciate them. Tell someone something that you admire about them, like being a great mother or being a great listener. If you find it difficult to come up with compliments, make a list of all the things that person does to add value to your life or others lives.
Psychologist William James said that "possibly the deepest human need is the need to feel appreciated."
Spend quality time with those that you love - give them your undivided attention. Spend time away from the phone, away from the TV and focus on communication and doing the things that you both love.
Give gifts - almost everyone loves receiving gifts. Most of the time the cost of the gift does not matter. It really is the thought. You can even give the gift of your time by helping someone out with doing some household chores, running errands, or even babysitting.
The quality of your health is tied to the quality of your relationships. You can improve those relationships by giving compliments, spending time with those you love and give someone the gift that would help them the most.
Most of all...don't forget your mom this Mother's Day!
